The Sympsychograph

David Starr Jordan published this image in Popular Science Monthly, 1896. He had claimed it was produced using a Sympsychograph, a machine transfers images from the deep within the mind onto film. Above, the person had supposedly been thinking of a cat. Jordan later claimed it was a joke, but readers nationwide believed in the machine.
