THE DEVIL'S DIARY

Volume IV, Halloween Issue (XXXVII)

When and where did you discover The Satanic Bible, and when did you realize you were a Satanist?

I'm actually unsure as to when I first read LaVey's tome, but it was sometime in mid or late 1980s, when I was about 15, 16 or so. I picked it up at a shopping mall, and surprisingly it didn't upset my folks when they found me reading it. I was always interested in the book, but in Florida, it was hard to get your hands on at the time. Once the Satanism scare of the late 80s came, the book was everywhere, but sadly the misconceptions still raged. I was heavily into Magic(k) at the time, and it all fit perfectly. No gods - no masters. Atheistic warlocks, what a wonderful idea!

What religion were you brought up in?

I was brought up in a strange blend of wayward-Catholicism and Freemasonry on my father's side, and my mother was agnostic, bordering on Atheism, who used Santeria-styled witchery.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I have a cat named Dumah (after the Angel of Confusion), a scorpion, some Cuban singing tree frogs. My home has an open door policy with animals, as my girlfriend, Denice, and I take in a few needy animals every now and again. At one time we had over 6 cats and 3 dogs here. The indoor cat count is at 5 now, with 2 strays we feed outside.

Do you wish to share any interesting supernatural experiences related to your rituals, and other paranormal experiences? Any experiences with demons, ghosts, aliens or dream relations?

I have had many paranormal experiences, but none that are amazing - or even that interesting - objects moving when I'm the only one in the room, noises, strange feelings, etc. My two UFO stories are just that, Unidentified Flying Objects, what they call a CE Type 4, but never seeing a "spaceship" up close (CE Type 3) or actually meeting aliens (CE Type 1). The first time, friends and I just couldn't tell what they were, though they moved nothing like planes, stars or "space waste" entering our atmosphere. The second time was a great explosion in the sky and a trail of fire seemingly going off into space. I saw that one at a bus stop, and it caused a great commotion with the three others there, as well as in the shopping center behind us. I could hear everyone talking. People asking each other if they had seen the same thing. When I made it home there were no reports of any night launches or military rocket testings, as at night or at dawn you can see the Space Shuttle launches in Cape Canaveral from Miami.

Do you wish to relate any notable experiences with blindlighters and playing a show?

Actually I don't, but when Timescape Zero played shows, it was always a bizarre event. People have been known to be stricken with a sort-of temporary insanity during out live sets… no joke. We have had people trying to smash up the club, tear down instruments and monitors, even the bartenders have gotten into the show, throwing bottles, and once even lighting a fire. We often ask people why they did what they did - they just tell us they "felt like it." I guess we have a stage presence that evokes some primal and destructive archetype within them.

What is your political orientation?

If I may stray for a second and go into something quickly to help explain my reading, musical, and political tastes. It is almost as if I have two personalities, yet I feel very whole. I have a polite and calm side, and a manic and violent side. Each effect how I feel at a particular moment and tend to dictate what I would rather read or listen to… classical music or death metal, a book about the uplifting of mankind or about serial killers. I find this balances my outlook and helps me deal with new and unexpected problems that may arise in this sometimes relaxing / sometimes hectic world.
I truly have none, as no current political system fills the needs of the people, as well as the needs of a government. I would be interested in sitting down with a group if intelligent people (or should I say "persons" as I feel "people" are more like cattle), and coming up with a system in which the masses have an, almost, unconditional personal freedom, abolishing all victimless crime, while the government is small and run similar to a Fascist regime where the State is the corporate system, and upholds the value of human life, while punishing those who truly deserve to be punished (ie - rapists, child molesters, murderers and thieves). Let's make the concepts of Heaven and Hell a reality here on Earth, as there is no afterlife - the good get rewarded (not ignored) and the "bad" get punished (not just locked away). I'm all for torture, as I have a very dark nature hiding inside. For now, until we can develop better, you can call me a Fascist, I don't mind - like Pasolini wrote in "Salo", "We Fascists are the true Anarchists."

What are some of your musical influences, and do you have a favorite band? What is your opinion of the rising Satanic Hardcore movement?

Everything I like, or anyone I've admired has influenced me in some way. From Boyd Rice to the Cro-Mags. From My Dying Bride to Divine. Merzbow to Martin Denny. Converge to Mozart. Sleep and Stan Getz. Wagner and Integrity. Lately my 'heavy rotation' consists of Arson, Dead to Fall, Atreyu, John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Thursday, Colour Haze, Hot Water Music, Butthole Surfers, My Dying Bride, Boyd Rice's "Music for Pussycats" and the Re/Search "Incredibly Strange Music" comps.
And to be frank, I have not noticed a rise in the Satanic Hardcore scene - except for a few punk and metal bands (The Quintessentials, Mindframe, Clockwork Satan, etc) by those who are members of the Church of Satan, but I have yet to find a big interest, in the hardcore music scene, with Satanism - at least not LaVeyian Satanism.

What is your favorite Timescape Zero song?

It would have to be our version of Ragnar Redbeard's poem "The Logic of To-Day" simply because of the fury of the song (double bass, thrashing guitars) mixed with the viciousness of the lyrics. Very self-therapeutic when performed live.

Who is your favorite author and why?

I have no single favorite author, because like music, my tastes vary… a lot. I hardly read any fiction - yet more than most, at one or two every few months. My love can be found in the non-fiction section of a bookstore. Science, philosophy, politics, religion, sociology and anthropology. Though some of the titles I read are so 'out there' they really shouldn't be classified as non-fiction - a strange blend of science, opinion and myth, I would say. My most cherished authors include Anton LaVey, Plato, Friedrich Nietzsche, William Shakespear, Robert Audrey, Hunter S. Thompson, Robert Anton Wilson, R. C. Zaehrner, Adam Parfrey, and Joseph Campbell. I also enjoy poetry by Aurthur Rimbaud, e. e. cummings, Rumi and the beat poets like Ginsburg and Kerouac.

What is your favorite film?

My favorite film is a toss up between my 'two halves' - the calm and the storm. My quiet side loves to turn down all the lights and watch "Amadeus" with my woman. My morbid half likes to (also) turn down all the lights and watch Apocalypse Now (Redux), while covered in face paint and throwing Molotov cocktails at passing cars.

Who is your favorite artist and favorite piece?

Salvador Dali has influenced my artwork the most. Again, each side of me cares for a different painting. My calmer side is easily captivated by "The Temptation of Saint Anthony", from 1946, because of the wide use of open space, and funny animal legs. Now, my wilder side has an interest in "Tuna Fishing". Done in 1967, it's a chaotic mix of Surrealism, pop-art, psychedelic, pointillism and others mashed on a canvas with great style and violence. You can see much of his influence in some of what I've done, artistically.

What is your ideal lair?

My ideal Lair, if living in the United States, would be in the North West (Washington State) or somewhere in the Rocky Mountains (Colorado). Ideally, I would love to save up enough money so I could move, and eventually pass away, on my native soil of Spain, in Galicia (a northern province). Location is much more important than the size of my place. I really have no need for anything bigger than a two bedroom home, so long as it's far away from dense civilization or city life.

What is your ideal auto?

My ideal car would either be a 1949 Cadillac Series 62, a 1948 Hudson Super Six, or a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. Black of course. Any help anyone?

What are any other projects you are involved with, and what is in store for the future?

Denice and I were running a punk record label, Lotus Records, but sold it just so we could focus harder on our personal projects. I run feastofhateandfear.com, where I've produced some records, CDs, fanzines and soon a few videos, graphic novels (comics), t-shirts, posters and much more. I am working with a new band, consisting of members of Timescape Zero called None Dare Call It Treason. We should be recording a CD EP this winter, it should be out by early 2003 and we're touring in April of 2003. So I guess we'll celebrate Walpurgisnacht on the open road. Check the feast of… website for updates.

I'd like to thank you for giving me the time and space to rant about my likes and dislikes. Keep up what you do, as many out there need some enlightening… or a serious ass whoopin'. Take care and hail Satan!
